You might actually be surprised at just how many ways there are to use them since many people think of essential oils for long, luxurious baths—as opposed to showers. However, essential oils can be used in the shower, even if you’re strapped for time and hopping in for just a few short minutes.
And here’s the best part: not only can you use them while you’re taking a shower, but you can really pamper yourself with essential oils as well. Read on to find out how you can easily transform your shower experience from mundane to spa-like with just a few oils and a couple of minutes.

9 Ways To Add Essential Oils To Your Shower Routine
Using essential oils while in the shower is a fantastic way to do something special for yourself when you’re just starting your day or even when it has come to an end. Seriously, taking just a couple of minutes and treating myself can mean the difference between a great mood and a not-so-great mood for me. Just the thought of inhaling the fragrant aromas of the oils makes me look forward to hopping into my morning shower!
Below, I’ve listed only a few of the ways to use essential oils in the shower. Trust me, this list is just the tip of the iceberg, but I wanted to give a few ideas to get you started. I have a feeling that once you start incorporating essential oils into your routine, you’ll never look back.
1. Dry brush before you get in
Start by taking a few minutes to dry brush before showering and you’ll bring the scent of essential oils into the shower with you. Bonus: adding essential oils to dry brushing can help with cellulite.
2. Boost your body wash & scrubs
Making body wash is one of the easiest and most cost effective beauty DIYs. The next time you whip up a new batch be sure to add essential oils. You can also keep a simple, scented body scrub in the shower and give yourself some extra exfoliation before shaving. We found that these are the best essential oils for sugar scrubs.
Even if you don’t DIY, you can still add essential oils to the products you already have. If you shower in the morning, use an energizing oil like sweet orange or peppermint. Add 10-12 drops for every ounce of body wash and give it a good shake before using.
3. Add aromatherapy to your haircare routine
Essential oils can give hair a much needed boost – especially if you’re trying to grow your hair! Use rosemary, lavender or any of our favorite essential oils for hair in a DIY apple cider vinegar hair rinse or add 6 drops of oil for every ounce of shampoo or conditioner. Shake well before using.
4. Spritz before you step in
Have you ever used a shower spray before? If you haven’t, you’re in for such a treat. Basically, they’re just like room sprays, except you spray them into the shower before stepping in. It’s like transporting yourself to a spa—in your own bathroom.
The heat and steam of the water naturally disperse and diffuse the essential oils throughout the air, so you’ll be enveloped with the therapeutic aroma while you shower. Genius, right? Shower sprays are seriously my favorite!

The heat and steam will help disperse the aroma throughout the shower, and you’ll reap all the therapeutic benefits while you soap up. This method is great for when you’re traveling, or you run out of shower steamers and forget to make more. Other ways to diffuse:
Use a wash cloth: Alternately, put a few drops of oil on a wet washcloth and tuck it in a corner.
Simple salt diffuser: Fill a small bowl with Epsom salt and add a few drops of essential oil. Put it in a spot where it will warm up but not get wet.
7. Make shower steamers
Another of my favorite ways to use essential oils in the shower is in shower steamers or shower bombs. They’re kind of like bath bombs. Just place one on the floor of your shower and let the steam disperse the aroma—easy peasy.

And while cleaning my house isn’t one of my favorite tasks, I actually enjoy it infinitely more when I’m using aromatic essential oils to help boost the cleaning power.
