In this Chanel Boy Bag review, I’m breaking down how it actually performs in real life, from sizing and wearability to styling and long-term value, to help you decide whether it’s worth the investment today. Chanel Boy bag history
The Chanel Boy bag is believed to be named after Coco Chanel’s lover, Boy Capel, and Karl Lagerfeld took inspiration for it’s shape from a cartridge bag and Boy Capel’s hobby: hunting. Most of Chanel’s bags feel timeless and elegant, whereas this was released in Chanel’s Fall Winter 2011 collection to be edgier and more masculine, hence the name.
What sets the Chanel Boy bag style apart from the Chanel classic flap bag is the rectangular border around the flap, and rather than having a CC clasp, the clasp on the Boy is an interlocking CC closure but on an almost lego-like background.
Chanel Boy bag review
The Chanel Boy bag comes in various materials, the most common being lambskin and calfskin. Look for calfskin if you want something more durable. It also comes in lots of different colors, hardware colors, and sizes.
The style I have is the New Medium size in glazed calfskin which I rented from JoinSwitch rather than buying. Use my JoinSwitch code DawesEve22J for $50 purchase credit . I tend to rent when I know the color and/or style isn’t something that’s my personal aesthetic and won’t get a lot of use from but that are fun to try out. I like the Chanel Boy New Medium size for the day but I personally think it’s a bit too big and chunky for an evening bag.
Some of the features I liked were the durable calfskin, practical size for a day bag, and it’s versatility. The shoulder strap has a leather section that goes on your shoulder which makes carrying it more comfortable than if it was all made of chain. The shoulder strap can be worn long on one shoulder or as as crossbody bag, or doubled up to be shorter. You can also use the top handle which tends to be my go-to way to carry it.
Is the Chanel Boy bag still in style
The Chanel Boy bag is still in style but it’s not as popular or trendy as it was at it’s peak. It’s still one of Chanel’s classic styles and is great for those who prefer a more masculine, casual, chunky handbag. It’s giving more effortless cool-girl vibes than the more elegant classic flap bag.
What sizes does the Chanel Boy bag come in
The Chanel Boy bag comes in several sizes and which size is right for you depends on what you want to carry in it and when you want to use it.
Mini Boy Chanel bag: Measures in at 5.9″ wide X 3.9″-inches” high X 2.3” deep. This is great for an evening bag that just fits your essentials (not including your phone).
Small Chanel Boy Flap: measures approximately 20 x 12 x 8 (cm)/7.9 x 4.7 x 3.1 (inches). This works for an everyday or evening bag when you only want to take the essentials and is big enough to fit most phones.
Old Medium Chanel Boy Flap : 25 x 15 x 9 (cm)/9.8 x 5.9 x 3.5 (inches). Large enough for an everyday bag, including most sunglasses, your phone and makeup bag.
New Medium Chanel Boy Flap: 28 x 18 x 9 (cm)/11″ x 7″ x 3.5″. This is more than large enough for an everyday bag. I managed to fit my card holder, keys, sunglasses case, and makeup in this size.
Large Chanel Boy Flap: measures approximately 11.75″ x 8.25″ x 3″. Not much bigger than the new medium and a practical day bag.
Extra Large Chanel Boy Bag: measures approximately 15″ x 11.5″ x 3.75″. The big daddy of the Boy Bags. This is for the woman who likes to carry it all.
Chanel Boy bag prices
The prices vary from year to year, by size, material and their condition (new vs pre-loved) but you can expect to pay approximately $6700-7600 for a new Boy Chanel bag and $1595-7945 for a pre-loved purse.
