Our ‘cut & sew’ knit series teaches how to create several different types of knit necklines. One of the most popular is the boat neckline. This lesson will teach you how to draft two variations of the boat neckline: one planned with a clean finish neckline, armhole and hem and the other for a fold-over neckline, armhole and hem finish. You will learn how to read a fashion sketch to determine the width of the desired shoulder, the body length and the front and back neckline drop. You will also learn valuable sewing tips on how to keep the neckline from stretching as you sew.
For this lesson, and for all of your future knit designs, you will use the knit T-shirt sloper drafted in our lesson, Drafting a Women’s Fitted Stable Knit T-Shirt from Measurements
If you’re a newbie working with knit fabric, before you get started, be sure to watch these knit lesson lectures: Introduction to Knit Fabrics and Knit Fabric Principles where you’ll learn about knit fabric structure and the science of stretch ratio. Once you’ve drafted your fitted stable knit T-shirt sloper you will be able to draft a series of knit garments using this sloper.
