Madonna Debuted a Retro Brunette Bob

To be fair, Mother’s Day is every day when you’re a Madonna fan. But this weekend—one week after most of our mom-celebrating Instagram stories expired from our friends’ feeds—mother Madge decided to continue the celebrations for her *own* giver of life.

In an Instagram story posted on Sunday, May 18, Madonna revealed that she’d dyed her hair a cool brown shade full of chocolate highlights and some chic grays. She’s a natural brunette, but this particular transformation held a deeper meaning.

“I missed my mother so I channeled her,” she wrote alongside the photo, which showed her staring offscreen, covered in necklaces and wearing her dark hair in a retro curled bob. The singer’s mom, who was also named Madonna Louise, died in 1963 when the artist was five years old.

In the past, Madonna has posted photos of her mama, and now that their hair is matching its obvious their similarities extend beyond their shared name. Her recent vintage hairstyle—which she showed off just days after rocking a bleached shade with dark roots—ended near her chin and featured a big, bouncy curl that was so very ’60s. Based on the photos I’ve seen, it’s the exact look her mom wore when she was little.

“My mother is the only other person I have ever heard of named Madonna,” the 66-year-old told Time back in the ’80s. “I never had trouble with the name … I went to Catholic schools. And then when I got involved in the music industry, everybody thought I took it as a stage name. So I let them think that … It’s pretty glamorous.”
