Maui Humane Society Targeted By Another Break-In In The Wake Of Lahaina Fire Recovery Efforts

Tragically, Maui Humane Society has been the victim of yet another break-in, adding to the challenges faced by the organization as it continues to serve animals and the community across the island during a time of ongoing recovery from the devastating Lahaina fires.

In a statement, the organization confirmed the most recent incident, saying, “We are saddened to share that Maui Humane Society was the victim of another break-in.” The organization emphasized that the animals in their care were unharmed. “First and most importantly: our animals are safe, and so are the staff and volunteers who care for them every day. For that, we are deeply grateful.”

The break-in caused extensive damage and financial loss. According to Maui Humane Society, “This incident resulted in damages that will likely cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair, including to our facility and upgraded security and camera system. Cash was also stolen. We believe this was a targeted act, and we do not yet know the full impact as the case is currently an open investigation.”

Local law enforcement responded quickly. The organization expressed appreciation, stating, “Mahalo to Maui Police Department for their quick response and ongoing work.”

These incidents come as Maui Humane Society continues to recover from the devastating Lahaina fires, during which the organization played a critical role in rescuing, sheltering, and caring for animals displaced by the disaster. In the aftermath of the fires, Maui Humane Society became a lifeline for countless pets and wildlife, providing emergency shelter, medical care, reunification efforts, and long-term support for residents and their pets who had lost everything.

Reflecting on the emotional toll of the break-ins, the organization shared, “This is a heavy moment for our organization. It is also a painful reflection of where we are right now. So many people are struggling and hurting in different ways, and sometimes that pain shows up as harm to others. Sadly, that harm directly impacts the animals on Maui who have nowhere else to turn.”

Despite exhaustion and hardship, the organization remains committed to its mission. “Today, we’re exhausted. But we’re thankful our animals were not harmed, and thankful for a community that keeps showing up for us when things feel heavy.”
