Hamburger Helper was an icon of my childhood, a lifesaver for my busy working mom. And while they’re mixes (just add meat!) are still good, if you want to upgrade them, Ree Drummond has the perfect homemade recipe for it. Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman, just shared her homemade version of a Hamburger Helper recipe, which she says she knows “will always be a hit” when she makes it.
Drummond shared her Fan-Favorite Beef Noodle Skillet recipe on the Food Network YouTube Channel this week. “If there is one recipe I know will always be a hit, it’s this one,” Drummond says on the video. She starts by cooking diced onions and garlic in a skillet, then adding ground beef.
Once the meet is browned, she adds more ingredients to start creating the sauce. Then, she adds egg noodles, beef broth, grainy brown mustard, and more to the same pan. From there, it just has to simmer for 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
You can either serve as-is or add a splash of cream and a dollop of sour cream to make the mixture even creamier. “It’s sort of a stroganoff idea, but more budget friendly,” she explains.
The recipe doesn’t just remind me of my childhood — it’s also nostalgic for Drummond. In the video, she shares that when her kids were little, she took them to the grocery store and had them pick out “whatever you want for me to make you for dinner.”
They picked Hamburger Helper, which inspired Drummond to come up with “a good homemade version of the box mix ever since.”
The finished product looks so hearty and good. “It’s nothing fancy, but boy is it delicious,” Drummond says. And now that I’m a busy mom myself now, that’s exactly the kind of recipe I need!
