How transparent is POS system cost, and how much do they charge for implementation?

Owing to the POS system’s pricing complexity, some vendors transparently showcase it on their website, while some give a quote after understating the feature requirement. 

Based on research, we found some vendors to covey pricing upfront, making it easier to compare costs. Conversely, some vendors maintained medium transparency, giving a ballpark for some plans and encouraging a buyer to get in touch for the complete breakdown of costs. 

High transparency means pricing plans are listed upfront for easy comparison, while medium transparency provides some details but requires contacting sales for full pricing. Low transparency indicates the product didn’t explicitly mention pricing, so we’ve used third-party sources to share the costs below.

Square also offers a comprehensive retail platform, Square for Retail. It’s an all-in-one POS solution for retail brands and offers more advanced features that help retailers run their businesses more efficiently. The free plan is available, and the plus plan costs $89 per month per location. In Square for Retail, you get advanced inventory tools and the ability to print barcode labels, among other things.

These insights are based on 19 reviews submitted by the G2 user community for Shopify POS between March 3, 2024, and February 21, 2025.

  • Pricing: 5.26% of users appreciated the affordability, while 10.53% expressed dissatisfaction, often citing concerns about high costs and the pricing structure.
  • Who uses it? Shopify POS is a go-to choice for small and mid-sized businesses, with 47.37% of users coming from companies with 11-50 employees.
