By Jamie Ferguson.
As Jack Frost’s icy fingers slowly begin their wintery crawl across the nation, and that shivering breeze has us reaching for the warm comforts of wool and cashmere, fear not my brethren, for the Prince of Whimsy hath returned.
In the immortal words of Mr Arnie Schwarzenegger ‘Jonathan, I told you I would be back’.
No wait. That’s not quite right. Let me try again; ‘It’s me. I have come back, again.’
Nope. Not it. Last time, here we go; ‘Who is your daddy and what does he do?’
Dammit… Meh, close enough.
Now, put that cookie down and come with me into this Autumn/Winter season, as we once more dextrously prance amongst the items I’m most looking forward to wearing.
Fishtail parka
It seems that lately my style inspiration is coming from one member of the PS team or another. Simon, Lucas, Manish and Alex have a lot to answer for.
Out of the four of them, however, it’s often Mr Natt who’s my sartorial North Star. I picked up this fishtail parka from Stan Ray last season after seeing a vintage number on Alex.
Now don’t hate me, I really tried to buy second hand, but I couldn’t find anything in my size, with the details I wanted, that wasn’t TOO expensive. I think that surprised me quite a bit, that some of the more classic vintage pieces were as pricey as they were.
But I did see this and dug the attention to the finer details eg the cloth selection, the buttons, and the overall shape of the sleeves and coat itself.
I’m not particularly enamoured with the logo on the breast pocket, knowing that it would look far ‘cleaner’ without, but I figured I could unpick it later if it bothered me too much. So far though, I’m fine with it.
‘Bourgeois French Ivy Mod’ appears to be the path I tread when wearing this; often pairing it with the AWMS beret, my Alden pennies and this Drake’s brown and ecru spot scarf.
Wythe flannel shirts
I swear to god I’ve never seen Yellowstone…
I own a couple of the Wythe tencel pearlsnaps and they’re probably my favourite cut of shirts. I wanted something heavier for the Autumn and had been seeing a bunch of checked flannels on gents I often turn to for inspiration: see Aaron Levine (here) and Chase Winfrey (here).
I figured Wythe would have some great options and in a cut I already enjoy, and boy did they have OPTIONS, roughly 35 last I checked.
I ended up going for a green check and the yellow above, which has quickly become my favourite shirt.
I thought yellow would be trickier to pair and style but this has not been the case. I’ll partner it with a white/off-white trouser, like these Buck Mason P43s, lean as heavily into the ‘Western’ styling as I can before throwing on a touch of ‘Ivy’ with some black penny loafers.
This really hits that ‘sweet spot’ I love of genre mixing.
Suede layering
Suede can be a treacherous mistress.
We’ve all been there. You throw on your favourite shoes or jacket, launch out the door with a spring in your step, only for the heavens to open and say ‘No Jamie! Not today you butt-munch. Get back inside and change!’ Thanks universe.
I know people say to just treat suede as you would any other material, but that’s hard when you live in the UK and 90% of the weather you experience is some form of wet.
However, if you’ve managed to acquire that mindset, possibly through hypnosis or some form of brain washing, you’re golden.
The rougher looking, the better the patina will appear on it, at least in my opinion.
But if you’re only on the first circle of the four dynamics and have yet to achieve ‘higher status’ you might feel more comfortable layering it underneath an oversized coat or chore, like I’ve done here with my LEJ Plage coat.
This jacket is from Gaijin Made, a sister company to Blue Blue Japan, both of which are owned and operated by Seilin & Co. I picked it up on Marrkt a few years ago.
Double-breasted chalkstripe suit
Arguably the most versatile suit in my wardrobe at the minute. Here me out…
I was sceptical whether I’d get much wear out of this chalkstripe double-breasted suit when I first ordered it from The Anthology, and approached the order with caution.
Inspired by images of Davide Baroncini of Ghiaia sporting what I can only assume is a Ralph Lauren Polo version in a worsted wool, I figured I would at least have one outfit I would wear regularly.
This has slowly morphed into several, and then many. Anytime I’ve put together an ensemble I’ve often thrown the jacket on top just to see what it looks like and voilà, nine times out of 10, another option emerges.
Even when outfits would normally benefit from a navy blazer, I’ll end up swapping this jacket in instead.
Harris Tweed Teba
If you ask me the Teba doesn’t get enough love.
I think people can get thrown by the fact it’s relatively boxy and unstructured compared with your standard tailored jacket, but equally too formal feeling when you want something more casual like a chore coat. A sartorial Catch-22.
I have to admit for ages I wasn’t convinced, but after spying this lil’ number on the Beige website – who do an excellent range of Teba’s from the OG maker, Justo Gimeno – and seeing how they styled it, I was in.
I’d also look to how Douglas Cordeaux or Arnold Wong wear theirs for inspiration.
Maybe it just coincided with the fact that as I’ve gotten bulkier (read: fat) and old (read: decrepit) I look for more comfort and range of movement from my garments and this Teba, made up in a Harris Tweed Hebrides gun-club check, delivers just that.
A great piece to layer underneath a larger overcoat or waxed jacket as I’ve done here, or keep it simple and rock it on its own.
