The alleged reasons behind Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban‘s separation are surfacing after the shocking announcement that their marriage had come to an end.
On September 29, reports broke that Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, had separated after 19 years of marriage, with insiders claiming that Urban was the one to end the relationship. “[Kidman] didn’t want this,” a source told People. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
Earlier this summer, Urban reportedly moved out of the Nashville home that he and Kidman share with their daughters, 17-year-old Sunday Rose and 14-year-old Faith Margaret, and into a separate property in the area, signalling the end of their marriage.

Why Did Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban Break Up?
Kidman and Urban reportedly broke up because of the distance in their relationship caused by their busy schedules. “Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour,” a source told the Daily Mail. “The intimacy isn’t there, they are just going through the motions [of being married].”
Though Kidman was reportedly “blindsided” by the breakup and has been “fighting to save the marriage,” according to People, those close to Urban felt the split was “inevitable.”
“Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall,” People’s source said.
Urban Allegedly Had Issues With Kidman’s Work Schedule
Urban reportedly grew frustrated with Kidman’s back-to-back acting projects after she vowed to slow down her work after a hectic 2024. That plan never came to fruition, and by April of this year, Kidman was promoting the thriller movie Holland, working on Nine Perfect Strangers season two, and was photographed on the set of Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
“Keith isn’t angry, but he’s worried and understandably very frustrated,” a source claimed to Australian outlet New Idea, via Daily Mail. “He knows how much Nic loves her job, but she keeps moving the goal posts. Instead of putting herself first – something he and the kids need her to do – she’s putting work first every time.”
The news of their separation came after Kidman wrapped filming Practical Magic 2. Meanwhile, Urban has been on tour.
Kidman & Urban Were ‘Living Apart’ for Months Before Their Split
While Urban moved out of the family’s Nashville home early in the summer, Kidman was also making some solo plans of her own.
In July, Kidman submitted documents to apply for residency in Portugal and Urban was not metioned in the application. At the time, sources said Urban’s tour schedule prevented him from applying. “It is mandatory for applicants to be physically present in order to apply for the visa,” an insider said. “He is scheduled to submit his application at a later date that works with his tour schedule.”
However, it now appears that perhaps Kidman was making plans to take up residency in Portugal alone.
Kidman and Urban, who married in 2006, have not yet filed for divorce.
