You may notice your feline friend occasionally has watery or runny eyes. While this can be concerning, understanding the possible causes can help you know when to seek proper care and how to keep your cat comfortable.
What Causes Runny Eyes in Cats?
Runny eyes, also called excessive tearing, can happen for many reasons. Some of the most common causes in cats include:
Viral Infections: Feline herpesvirus is one of the leading causes of eye problems in cats. This virus can cause watery discharge, redness, and discomfort. It’s especially common in young kittens and can be quite serious.
Bacterial Infections: Bacteria like Chlamydia felis and Mycoplasma can also cause eye discharge. These infections often create thick, sticky discharge rather than just watery tears.
Eye Injuries: Scratches on the eye’s surface (called corneal ulcers) can cause excessive tearing, squinting, and pain. Cats can injure their eyes during play, fights with other cats, or from foreign objects.
Eyelid Problems: Sometimes the eyelids themselves become inflamed or infected. This condition, called blepharitis, can cause discharge, swelling, and discomfort around the eyes.
Signs to Watch For
Pay attention to these symptoms that may come with runny eyes:
- Thick, colored discharge (yellow or green)
- Squinting or keeping the eye closed
- Redness around the eye
- Swelling of the eyelids
- Pawing at the eye
- Changes in appetite or energy
- Sneezing or nasal discharge
You should call your vet if your cat has:
- Thick or colored discharge
- Signs of pain like squinting
- Swollen or red eyelids
- Any discharge lasting more than a day or two
- Other symptoms like loss of appetite or lethargy
Even clear, watery discharge should be checked if it continues for several days.
What Your Vet Might Do
Your veterinarian will examine your cat’s eyes carefully and may perform special tests to determine the cause. Treatment depends on what’s causing the problem and might include eye drops, oral medications, or other therapies.
While occasional mild tearing can be normal, persistent runny eyes usually indicate a problem that needs attention. Many eye conditions are treatable when caught early, but they can become serious if left untreated.
