AI Makes You Faster but Also More Tired

AI was supposed to make work easier. And in many ways, it has. You can write faster, code faster, design faster, and even think faster. But something strange is happening.

People are getting more done. Yet they feel more tired than ever.

This is the new reality of working with AI.

A Harvard graduate, Zara Zhang, recently shared a simple but powerful observation. AI gives you endless possibilities. You can do more tasks in less time.

But instead of finishing early, people just keep adding more work.

You write one article. Then you think, why not write three? You build one feature. Then you feel like building five more.

The finish line keeps moving.

Developers and builders are seeing the same thing. Pavliuk Petro said it clearly.

With AI, you can get 2–3x more done.

But you are also switching between tasks constantly. You start something. Then jump to another idea. Then another.

By the end of the day, you have done a lot. But your brain feels exhausted.

This is not a new concept. It connects to something called the Jevons paradox. It means when something becomes more efficient, people don’t use it less.

They use it more.

For example, when machines became fuel-efficient, people didn’t save fuel.
They drove more.

The same is happening with AI. AI makes work faster. So we take on more work.

Research also supports this shift.

Reports from Harvard Business Review and Platformer show that heavy AI users are not relaxing.

They are actually working more.

Why?

Because AI creates pressure. If you can do more, you are expected to do more. There are three big reasons behind this.

  1. Oversight increases

When AI helps you produce faster, someone has to check everything.

You generate content quickly.
But then you spend time reviewing, editing, and fixing it.

So the work does not disappear. It just shifts.

  1. Competition gets intense

If everyone has AI, everyone becomes faster.

This means the baseline goes up.

What was “good enough” before is no longer enough.

Now people expect more output, more speed, and better quality. So you push yourself harder just to keep up.

  1. Creation becomes addictive

AI gives instant results.

You type something, and within seconds, you get output. This creates a loop.

You want to try more ideas. Test more prompts. Build more things.

It feels exciting. But it also makes it hard to stop.

Another important effect is the growing gap between people.

Power users of AI are moving ahead very fast. They are producing more, learning faster, and building quicker. But average users are not catching up at the same speed.

This creates a divide.

Those who know how to use AI well get ahead. Others fall behind.

So where does this leave us?

AI is not the problem. The real issue is how we use it.

Right now, many people are using AI to do more work. Not to do better work or to save time.

There is a simple mindset shift that can help.

Instead of asking, “What more can I do with AI?” Ask, “What can I stop doing because of AI?”

That changes everything.

Use AI to remove boring tasks. Use it to simplify your workflow. Use it to create space in your day.

Not just to fill your day with more tasks.

Because if you are not careful, AI will not free you.

It will just make you busier. Faster output. More tasks. Less rest.

And that’s the paradox. AI gives you superpowers. But without control, it also drains you.

In the end, productivity is not about doing more. It is about doing what actually matters. AI can help you get there. But only if you decide where to stop.
