Olly’s loving heart is even bigger than his wound.

From a distance you could see the red. It wasn’t dripping blood but was a massive wound exposing the bright red tissue beneath the last layer of this young bull’s skin that had been ripped away by a passing vehicle. Luckily, the wound was fresh. We’d gotten to him in time to save him.

We didn’t know if Olly was unable to stand, or if he was suffering so much that he wouldn’t stand. When cows and bulls are feeling most vulnerable they often become extremely still, perhaps as a survival instinct to avoid detection by a predator species. Olly did not want to move, but getting him to our hospital was made much easier because of our hydraulic lift.

And when we arrived, Olly still wouldn’t stand so we got him on a mattress and pulled him into the treatment area where we could assess his wound and determine what to do. Was there enough flesh to suture him? We called our surgeon to decide, and soon we were administering sedation so that he could tolerate us manipulating the tissue that was still alive around the wound.

After surgery, as soon as his bandaging was complete and he’d had time to recover, Olly stood and from that moment forward he revealed his true nature–as one of the most gentle little bulls we’ve ever met. Olly would have been dead by now without rescue. But look what happened instead!
