Waltzing with Brando (2025) movie review: Cast, story, when & where to watch
Waltzing with Brando, starring Billy Zane and Jon Heder, is set to hit U.S. theaters on September 19, 2025. Inspired by Marlon Brando’s bold decision to step away from Hollywood’s limelight, the film explores his visionary attempt to build the world’s first sustainable eco-retreat on his private island of Tetiaroa in the 1970s. Whether his dream succeeded or not is something you’ll have to see for yourself. I had the chance to attend the pre-release screening at the Las Vegas premiere and there’s so much to share. Here’s everything you need to know before watching from the synopsis to the cast of Waltzing with Brando to my personal take. Spoiler alert: it’s absolutely worth seeing.

A couple of other fun facts about the movie. Incredibly, the independent film is privately funded through a single source (Dean Bloxom) and will be up for sale at Cannes Market. Also, the Producers Bill Fishman, Billy Zane, and Dean Bloxom have pledged 5% of proceeds from the movie to be sent to those living on Tetiaroa.
Waltzing with Brando synopsis
The movie is an adaption by Bill Fishman of Bernard Judge’s memoir, “Waltzing With Brando: Planning a Paradise in Tahiti”. It tells the story of Marlon Brando (portrayed by Billy Zane), at the height of his fame during filming several movies, when he purchased a remote, undeveloped island in Tahiti. Longing to step away from the chaos of Hollywood, find privacy away from celebrity fame, and prove that sustainable living was possible, he enlisted the help of Los Angeles architect Bernard Judge (Jon Heder).
Together, over the next several years, they embarked on an ambitious plan to create one of the world’s first eco-friendly retreats, blending vision, idealism, and the dream of harmony between nature and design.
Waltzing with Brando review
The movie Waltzing with Brando is based on a true story, one I actually didn’t know, and I was moved by their tenacity to bring a dream to life with ideas for sustainable living way ahead of that time. It’s an emotional, humorous movie with beautiful cinematography. It was actually really nice to hear an audience laugh out loud at a movie.
I really admired how the film was shot and edited to capture the look and atmosphere of the early ’70s. The shifting aspect ratios, moving from full screen to the perspective of Marlon Brando’s camera made the experience feel immersive and intimate. It’s one of those beautiful films where the cast is given space to explore their ideas and emotions, and the thoughtful editing all come together to pull you in completely. You’ll leave wanting to book flights to Tahiti.
What was really incredible was Billy Zane’s interpretation of Brando, especially in the Godfather scene. From his facial expressions, to dramatic pauses and accent, you could’ve been mistaken for thinking it was an actual clip. Even down to the hair, makeup, costume and the cat.
Do I recommend going to see it? I personally really enjoyed it and learning something I didn’t know. It was a funny, feel good, light and educational movie.
