Mistake one: comparing tubs instead of reading the panel

Two tubs, both 2 lbs, both $45. One delivers 24g of protein per 33g scoop. The other delivers 20g per 40g scoop. The first is roughly 73% protein by weight. The second is 50%. You’re paying identical money for a product that’s half filler — maltodextrin, cocoa, creamer, sweetener.

The fix takes fifteen seconds. Divide protein grams by scoop size, multiply by 100. Anything under 65% deserves a second look. Under 50% and you’re buying flavoured sugar with a protein garnish.

A simpler rule: put the shake wherever it plugs a genuine gap. Mid-afternoon, when you’d otherwise reach for biscuits, beats straight after a workout you did on a full stomach.

Mistake four: treating whey as the default and everything else as a compromise

Whey is popular for solid reasons — high leucine, fast absorption, cheap, decent tasting. That doesn’t make it universally better.

  • Lactose intolerance: concentrate can carry 1-3g of lactose per scoop, while isolate usually stays under 1g.
  • Vegan diets, for obvious reasons.
