Where to go in Portugal for your breakaway : Are you thinking about going to Portugal for your break away this year? If so, you’re in for a real treat. Portugal is one of Europe’s most popular destinations – offering stunning coastlines, rich culture, mouth-watering cuisine, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It’s a country that offers so much and has a diverse range of things you can do. No matter your interests, you’ll find something to do, whether that’s finding award-winning restaurants, going on hikes (you could book a walking holiday in Portugal), or exploring historic cities.
The question is where in Portugal you should go; it’s hard to narrow things down, but we have tried. From a few nights in Lisbon, to wine tasting in Porto or exploring Madeira, below we have put together a brief guide on three places in Portugal you should go for your break away.
Lisbon
A good place to start is the capital of Portugal, Lisbon. It’s a good mix of old and new, helping make it suitable for all interests. One minute you could be exploring the cobbled streets, the next you could be enjoying cocktails in a newly built rooftop bar. When visiting, you have to have lunch at Vida de Tasca and go to the Time Out Market to try out a variety of cuisines. To say it’s the capital, it’s not too expensive, meaning you don’t have to break the bank to visit.
Porto
Famous for its port wine and beautiful riverside setting, Porto is full of character. Explore colourful buildings, taste your way through wine cellars, and take a boat trip along the Douro River. It’s a little more laid-back than Lisbon but just as enchanting. It’s one of those places that once you have been, you’ll be thinking about when you can return again in the future. You could go to Lisbon and Porto for your break away, as they are only a 2 hour and 30 minute train ride.
Madeira
If you want to go somewhere away from the mainland, you could book a trip to Madeira. This Portuguese island offers breathtaking scenery, botanical gardens, and excellent hiking – another place where a lot of people book walking holidays too. It’s perfect for families, couples or solo travellers as there is something for everyone on the island. If you do visit, you should try the toboggan ride – it’s a very unique experience, which you won’t get to do in many other countries, if any. An interesting fact is that Cristiano Ronaldo is from Madeira, and when visiting, you can see his statue, which they built and his museum.
We hope we have given you some inspiration or helped you narrow down your search. Where in Portugal do you think you are going to go and why? Will you be trying one of the places in our guide above?
