My sister loves toast. I can picture her perfect slice in my head: a tiny bit darker than the average slice, and slathered in (salted) butter.

My sister also loves makeup, so I’m very pleased to let her know that this fall is her season. “Toasted blush” is trending, and it’s as delectable as a perfectly browned piece of sourdough.

About Toasted Blush

Baked powder blushes are a thing in the beauty world, but toasted blush is more about shade than formula. Think terracotta, natural clay orangey-red browns, cinnamon, and rust.

If you’re still in a summer state of mind, toasted blush might be most easily understood as the next iteration of sunburnt blush. We’re not basking in the rays as much these dasy, but we are getting a nice glow via patio heaters while we wrap ourselves in whatever sweater we were smart enough to pack for our September spritz date.

A proper toasted blush look is a little heavy handed on the pigment. The color shouldn’t just dot the apples of your cheeks—your nose was in that toaster, too. You can also use the same shade as eyeshadow for maximum (basically, that Breville is dialed all the way up) impact.

The Trend

Like so many beauty trends, we have to give Hailey Bieber some props for this one. Rhode’s Toasted Teddy Pocket Blush, a bronze terracotta shade, was one of the founder’s go-tos as she embarked on Cinnamon Girl Fall last year. Her application videos are still some of the best inspiration for the look.

Toasted blush is also the easiest matchup for our continued love of all things butter yellow. If you’re going for lighter outfits this fall as opposed to leaning into the dark romance trend, I’ll be the one to ask… would you like some toast with all that butter?

How to Wear It

While chatting with Byrdie about Rhode’s initial blush launch, Bieber gave us her tips for a toasted blush look. (She called it sunburnt, but again… this is the fall version.)

Glossier

“My advice: You can always start with less and see how it feels for you. And you can build on top of that,” Bieber explained. “You can start with just a little flush of color on the cheek, and the intensify it if you want to. Start off slow. See what works for you. Everyone has such different undertones to their skin. So what works for me may not work for somebody else and vice versa.”
