How To Style UGGs, According To A Fashion Expert

‘Tis the season for your UGGs to shine.

Some days are just not meant for real shoes. When it’s pitch black as you get dressed, and you can just see the frost crystallised on leaves and sidewalks, you could be forgiven for wanting to forgo your everyday shoes for some UGGs. Not even your trusted trainers are warm enough to help you brave the elements.

SKIP TO:

But life doesn’t stop just because the weather has decided to stop playing nice, which means we need to find a way to elevate your fleece-lined boots. Workwear and fleece winter boots may seem like a paradox, but as demonstrated by celebs and our favourite influencers, it’s actually possible to wear your favourite furry shoes without looking like you’ve just rolled out of bed.

For celebrity inspo, look no further than JLo. The multi-hyphenate often steps out in her favourite UGGs, paired with baggy, boyfriend denim, a fitted turtleneck and a designer handbag. It’s a sartorial formula she’s repeated on several occasions (we love a serial outfit repeater) and for good reason. Comfy, simple yet oh-so-chic, we’re copping this look tomorrow.

So how does one go about styling the boot without looking like you’re popping to the shops? If the street style at fashion weeks is anything to go by the rule of thumb is to never wear them with sweatpants. Then opt for tailored pieces to elevate the boot so that your choice of footwear feels more intentional than an afterthought. And finally, there’s the accessories. The devil is indeed in the details. If you properly accessorise the outfit with jewellery and a structured purse, you can go anywhere with these looks. Below are some easy formulas that will get your fleeced boots into any room.

Blanket statements

Swaddling yourself in a long coat might sound counterintuitive if the goal is to look dressed up. But, styled in the right way, looking comfy can be just as effective. A long wool coat in a neutral shade is the ultimate timeless piece. Pair with wide leg jeans, a suede bag and a chunky knit for a laid-back but stylish look. The key with this is quality: if you invest in pieces with natural fabrics, the garments will shine despite their simplicity.

Go monochrome

One of the easiest ways to look put-together when you have to race out the door is to opt for a monochromatic ensemble. Take your style cues from street style pros who’ve mastered the art of making fleece boots look cool with their all-cream or all-black looks. Note: Both tastemakers paired a slightly oversized jacket with an ankle-length skirt and micro bag. Go on, give it a go.

Louder!

Monochrome not your vibe? Try swinging in the other direction by going loud with your outfit. Opt for fun colours like pink or a loud animal print that instantly makes the look feel more intentional—and party-appropriate to boot! Pick a statement item, preferably in a bright hue and pile on a few slightly contrasting colours through accessories. The UGGs will serve as the one grounding piece, in a neutral hue, almost like a basic that ties together the rest of the outfit. The key here is to really spin that colour wheel!

Suit up

It may go against your instincts but actually, pairing your UGGs with a loose-fitting suit could just be your answer to all your winter dressing woes. Make sure the trousers have a certain amount of slouch—you don’t want something too slim-fitting that might clash with the casual nature of the boot. Oh, and don’t forget a statement jacket—a cocooning coat goes a long way in pulling an outfit together. Forget mob wife, this look is full-on mafia boss.

Model off duty

Pairing your UGGs with some jeans is hardly revolutionary, but this season you should channel the off duty model. Wide jeans and an oversized jacket give the look a relaxed feel, but a chic statement bag (perhaps in woven leather?) will elevate it. Bonus points for an oversized scarf in a contrasting colour.

Sweeping victory

You might have noticed that the key to a lot of these looks is a pair of sweeping trousers. Long, wide-legged jeans pair with UGGs perfectly. The width of the trousers elegantly offsets the chunky shoe. When the boots took over pop culture in the 00s, skinny jeans were in vogue. So there’s something about pairing them with wide legs that feels very current. You can, of course, lean into the whole noughties style, which is a look in itself.

Alternate route

The beauty of UGGs today is that there are so many more styles than the classic boot. You don’t have to choose between being trendy and cosy, because the brand has its own take on platforms, ballet flats (yes, seriously!), clogs, and more. You can go about styling these like you would any of your favourite shoes, except these have a warm fleece lining inside.
