13 Reversible Winter Coats That Are a Genius Packing Hack

As a travel writer and the founder of a packing list newsletter, I’ve found that it’s actually possible to pack lightly in the winter—you just have to get creative. Over the years, I’ve discovered several tricks to strategically pack for cold temperatures while still feeling like you have enough to wear. One of the most straightforward tips is to find pieces that do double-duty. A reversible winter coat, for example, is the type of item that provides two distinct looks throughout your travels—plus, you can wear it while in transit, and it won’t take up any precious suitcase real estate.

On a recent trip to the Swiss Alps, I donned the ultra-warm Overland Chantal Reversible Sheepskin Coat. Over the course of eight days, I alternated between the fuzzy shearling side and the side with a smoother suede-like finish. It was basically like having two coats in one, which allowed me to circumvent the outfit fatigue I’m prone to encountering on longer trips.

Below, I rounded up reversible jackets and coats that will basically double your winter wardrobe this season.

Best Reversible Winter Coats for Travel

Vxvger Women’s Winter Coat

Amazon

If you love a long puffer in the winter—but you also get tired of the look after the first few weeks of the season—this cozy puffy coat is for you. One side is made of a windproof solid fabric, the other is a fuzzy plush material. It comes in a range of fun colorways, including army green, navy blue, and burgundy, but the plush side is always white, giving you some options for your daily travel color palette.

Bellivera Women’s Puffer Jacket

Amazon

The Bellivera Women’s Puffer Jacket is proof that you don’t have to shell out a ton of money for a reversible coat. While it doesn’t exactly give you a ton of outfit versatility—the quilted side and the nylon finish side are the same color—there’s just enough difference that your sightseeing photos won’t look completely the same in every single one. Bonus: both sides of the coat have functional pockets.

Banana Republic Reversible Vegan Suede Sherpa Jacket

Banana Republic Factory

When it comes to reversible outerwear, it doesn’t get much chicer than the Banana Republic Reversible Vegan Suede Sherpa Jacket. When you’re going for a cozy vibe, wear it with the sherpa facing out, and when you want more of an elegant look (maybe as you’re walking to dinner), flip it inside out to show the vegan suede.

Xukiki Reversible Trench Coat

Amazon

If there’s some precipitation in your destination’s forecast, you’ll need to pack accordingly. This waterproof, reversible trench coat is long and great for layering, and the drawstring waist will help give it a fitted look if desired. Not only can the jacket be reversed between a colorful option (with navy, green, and red available in addition to black) and a beige side, but the hood is also reversible, so you can match and still stay dry.

Beyond Yoga Reversible Quilted Jacket

Beyond Yoga

The Beyond Yoga Reversible Quilted Jacket is a casual number you can wear to the airport and bring with you on the chilly plane as you head somewhere warmer this winter. When you’re tired of the sherpa side, turn the jacket inside out to reveal the smooth quilted side. And if you’re worried about the light color, don’t stress; this style is machine washable.

Varley Serina Reversible Quilt Jacket

Dick’s

Not all winter trips require the heaviest coat in your arsenal. For some, you just need a light layer, like the Varley Serina Reversible Quilt Jacket. This boxy bomber jacket, available in light blue and cream, has both a bouclé sherpa side as well as a quilted side. You’ll find roomy pockets on either, and the knitted cuffs and collar help to keep in body heat (and give the jacket a few more style points).

Damson Madder Anja Reversible Organic Cotton Trench Coat

Anthropologie

Save this one for the late winter days that feel more like spring. The Damson Madder Anja Reversible Organic Cotton Trench Coat is made of a comfortable organic cotton material and features two statement-making options: an eye-catching red or a classic brown plaid. The long style means you can easily dress it up or rely on it for extra coverage if it’s a little chillier out.

Alpha Industries Reversible Als/92 Mod Liner Jacket

Shopbop

This is the type of reversible jacket you’ll really get some mileage out of. The mid-weight, crewneck layer is black on one side and an almost olive-gray on the other—two hues you can wear with almost anything in your closet. The quilted material and sizable buttons add even more visual interest.

Madewell Reversible Denim & Sherpa Jacket

Madewell

So you want to add both a denim jacket and a sherpa jacket to your closet? Well, this is the piece for you. The Reversible Denim & Sherpa Jacket from Madewell is just a bit oversized, incredibly versatile, and made to be a warm layer or lightweight jacket on its own, so it provides plenty of use. Note the contrasting faux leather piping and the braided buttons for extra flair points.

Eileen Fisher Hooded Reversible Coat

Nordstrom

The Eileen Fisher Hooded Reversible Coat is a true wardrobe staple and a travel must-have. The oversized style is made of a heavy-duty organic cotton blend and features an olive green side and an off-white side, both of which have buttons and side-seam pockets. This would be the ideal outerwear choice for a late winter or early spring adventure in the English countryside or a weekend in Savannah, Georgia, or Charleston, South Carolina.

Velvet by Graham & Spencer Albany Reversible Faux Shearling Jacket

Bloomingdale’s

This faux shearling jacket is a surefire way to elevate a cozy cabin weekend look. Designed with a warm collar, concealed front snap closures, and side slip pockets, the reversible jacket comes in both espresso brown and sand. Opt for the former if you want a greater variety in your looks (the deep brown is a lovely contrast to its cream fleece counterpart).

Canada Goose Alberni Reversible Fleece

Bloomingdale’s

When your travel plans don’t necessarily require a long puffer coat (but you still want to stay warm), think about something like the Canada Goose Alberni Reversible Fleece. With an off-white fleece material side and a dark olive side, the dropped-shoulder jacket will keep out the chill while increasing the number of looks you can don over the course of your trip. The reversible hood also adds another layer of protection from the elements.

AYR The Chalet

Ayr

With a style name like “The Chalet,” you know a jacket is going to be cozy. This AYR style is a reversible fleece car coat designed without snap closures, a collarless neckline, and pockets on both sides. Wear it with the fuzzy fleece side out for a more wintery look, or swap it for the batted quilting side—the latter feels a bit more versatile. If you’re someone who loves a neutral, go for the off-white colorway; otherwise, the leopard fleece reverses to a not-as-punchy solid black.
