The moment our beagle, Maple, slipped under the fence and vanished into the woods, I knew we needed a tracker. Two hours later, she came trotting back with mud up to her ears, but the panic was real. I ordered a GPRS tracker for dogs the next day. Then came the surprise: the hard part wasn’t buying it. It was setting the thing up so I’d actually trust it. Before you start, here’s a quick distinction: the GPRS part handles the data connection that sends your dog’s location to your phone. The GPS part calculates it. Before You Unpack: What You’ll Actually Need
You’d think a tracker, a cable, and a SIM would suffice. Technically, it does. But to avoid the rage-inducing middle of setup, gather:
- A smartphone with the tracker’s app (check that the app is current in the App Store or Google Play).
- A small paperclip or SIM ejector tool (for models with a removable nano-SIM).
- Your account login for the tracker’s cloud service, if you already created one.
- Your home router’s Wi-Fi password (the app might need internet to push settings; GPRS trackers themselves don’t use Wi-Fi).
- At least 90 minutes of uninterrupted time. Seriously.
When I unboxed mine, I skipped the manual because I’d used a dog tracker before. That was a mistake. The included micro-SIM was not activated, and the app wouldn’t pair until I’d inserted it and set the APN. I lost an afternoon to a support chat queue because I assumed the SIM was pre-activated. Don’t skip the manual.
Step 1: Charge the Battery to a True 100%
Plug the tracker in and charge it until the app (or LED light) reports 100%. This can take 2 to 3 hours, even if the indicator goes green early. The first charge calibrates the battery gauge, and if you stop at “full” after fifteen minutes, you’ll get a misleading half-day of battery life later.
I made this exact mistake: my new tracker showed a full battery after 20 minutes, so I mounted it on Maple’s collar and went for a long walk. It died at hour four. After a proper charge cycle, the same tracker lasted 56 hours on the default ping interval.
Step 2: Insert the SIM Card (or Activate the eSIM Profile)
This is where many GPRS models differ. If your tracker has a physical SIM slot, use the paperclip to open the tray, drop in the nano-SIM, and make sure the gold contacts face down. Seat it firmly; a loose SIM is the #1 cause of “device offline” errors.
If your tracker uses an eSIM, the activation step usually involves scanning a QR code in the manual or entering an activation code in the app. In our case, Maple’s tracker had a pre-installed eSIM, but I still had to register an account with the network provider before the data connection would work.
Here’s the part most people overlook: check the APN (Access Point Name). This is the name of your mobile network’s gateway. For many European trackers, the APN is something like m2m.telefonica.esp or gprs.mnc. If the app has a hidden APN field, find it and copy it exactly from the provider’s manual. I entered “three” instead of “three.co.uk” and my tracker showed full signal but no data. That was a confusing 30 minutes.
Step 3: Pair the Tracker with the App
Open the app, create an account, and enter the tracker’s unique identifier. This is usually a 15-digit IMEI or a serial number printed in the manual, not on the device label. Some apps scan a QR code on the tracker’s underside; that’s faster and less error-prone.
Once paired, the app will prompt you to name the device and possibly set your dog’s profile. Don’t skip this. A dog profile (with age and weight) helps the app estimate activity later, and it lets you see if the tracker is still attached if it pops off.
Be patient during pairing. The app may download a firmware update, and the tracker will reboot a few times. My tracker’s LED blinked blue then green, and I thought it was broken. It was just installing a patch.
Step 4: Test Location Accuracy All Around Your House
Do this before you set foot outdoors. Take the tracker (attached to your dog’s collar) and walk through every room. Open the app and let the location update—this can take 30 seconds on the first ping. Compare the reported position with your actual position using your phone’s map.
At this stage, you’re not looking for centimetre accuracy. You’re looking for a pattern. Ideally, the tracker stays within 10-20 metres of its true position. In my test, the tracker was spot-on in the kitchen, but in the basement, it thought Maple was on the neighbour’s roof. That’s because GPRS relies on cell tower triangulation when the GPS satellite signal is weak indoors. If the app shows a “network location” or “approximate” tag, that’s normal.
Step 5: Create a Geofence (Before You Need One)
A geofence is a virtual boundary on the map. Set one for your garden or yard, and the app will alert you when your dog crosses it. Here’s the tricky part: you need to choose a radius that isn’t so tight that you get false alarms, and not so loose that it’s useless.
For our 18-metre garden, a geofence with a 50-metre radius worked well. If your yard backs onto a road, you might want a tighter radius. Test it by walking the boundary with the tracker in hand. I set ours to 50m and, when Maple zoomed after a squirrel to the fence line, the alert fired only when she actually crossed the property line. The app’s radius measurement uses the GPRS location, not the GPS location, at the moment of crossing, so expect it to be a bit fuzzy.
Step 6: The Long-Leash Outdoor Test
Now walk your dog on a long leash or a reliable fenced area. During this test, do two things: update the location every five minutes and note the battery percentage at the start and end.
On a sunny day, GPRS trackers are at their best because they get frequent GPS fixes. But if you’re walking through a heavily wooded area or a canyon, the tracker may switch to cell-tower triangulation and the position can drift by 30 metres or more. That’s not a malfunction; it’s physics. In our first field test, Maple’s tracker showed a correct position as long as we were on the open path, but in a thick pine forest, it placed her on a path that was 80 metres to the east.
Step 7: Hand the Leash to Someone Else and Stay Home
This is the hardest test and the one that matters most. Give your partner, a friend, or a neighbour the leash, and watch the live tracking on your phone. Ask them to walk normally, turn corners, and occasionally pause. Watch the app’s screen and observe how long it takes for the location to update.
During my first test, the tracker seemed to lag by 400 metres at one point. I panicked. Then my partner walked back to the spot, and the tracker corrected itself. What happened? The device was set to “power saver” mode, which only pings every 10 minutes. I’ve since set it to a “10-second ping” for real-time tracking and “1-minute ping” for day-long battery.

Troubleshooting Common GPRS Tracker Failures (Real Examples)
Even after you follow the steps, things can go sideways. Here are the failures I’ve encountered and their fixes:
- Tracker won’t connect to the app. Check the SIM card’s IMEI and the APN settings. For physical SIMs, reseat the card and reboot the tracker. For eSIMs, re-enter the activation code.
- The app says “offline” all the time. Many GPRS trackers have a sleep mode that activates after 30 minutes of no movement. If your dog is lying down, the tracker will go quiet to save battery. Pick it up and shake it before troubleshooting.
- Battery drains faster than expected. The default ping interval is often 60 seconds, which is fine. If your model supports a 1-second live mode, use it sparingly. A 10-second ping can drain a 500mAh battery in 18 hours, while a 60-second ping can last 3 days.
- Location is completely wrong. This is usually due to the tracker being indoors or in a car trunk; GPS and GPRS signals are blocked. Give the tracker a clear view of the sky and wait a few minutes.

What to Do in Your First Month of Tracking
Once the tracker is working, don’t just ignore it. I’ve built a monthly routine that keeps Maple’s tracker reliable:
- Charge the tracker to full once a week. Even if it says 60% after a week, a weekly full charge prevents loose calibration.
- Once a month, check the SIM or eSIM balance. Some plans expire after 90 days of inactivity.
- Every other month, update the app and the tracker’s firmware.
- Before every walk, open the app and confirm the last-known location is less than 10 minutes old. If it’s older, trigger a live test.
I also add a second geofence around our house, not just the garden. The extra layer is a bit of overkill, but when we accidentally left the back gate open, the “home” geofence caught the escape before the garden one did.
