What is LEGO SMART Play? 

LEGO SMART Play is the latest technology to come out of the LEGO Group. It officially launched earlier this year, back in March, with a new collection of Star Wars sets. What makes the tech so unique is that it elevates imaginary play to new heights with special sounds and lights specific to that set. Not only that, it helps encourage screen-free play while still incorporating innovative technology that the new generation loves. And while I’m a major Star Wars fan, I have to say, this new collection of LEGO Pokémon sets is definitely the cream of the crop in the SMART Play family. 

What’s in the new LEGO x Pokémon SMART Play Collection? 

So glad you asked! This new drop expands the Pokémon range with 12 new sets and features 20 iconic Pokémon creatures across the board. Two are complete all-in-ones, while the other 10 are compatible sets. The two all-in-one sets feature Pikachu (of course), along with Charizard and Jolteon for the other. Both sets come with SMART bricks (one for Pikachu and two for Charizard and Jolteon), four SMART tags, a charger, and the corresponding figures. The other 10 sets are compatible; they don’t come with SMART bricks but do feature tags so you can mix and match during playtime. 

What makes this new collection so special is that it combines the lore and fandom of traditional Pokémon — from the OG storytelling to even the sounds the creatures make — all with our favorite building brick toys. This moment signifies the ultimate crossover between Pokémon and LEGO fans to create the world (and friends) they’ve always dreamed of.

When Does the New LEGO x Pokémon SMART Play Collection Come Out?

Today! The new range of Pokémon LEGO sets is officially available starting today. However, since this collection will be extremely popular amongst Pokémon and LEGO fans alike, they’ve decided to put it on pre-order first to make sure everyone has a chance to get one before they sell out. They’ll ship out starting Saturday, August 1st, 2026. And as someone who has had a sneak peek and played with the new sets before anyone else, I can tell you firsthand that these will definitely sell out.
