19 People Shot in Major Cities of the Country
This weekend was a bloody one in a major U.S. city, where 19 people were shot seemingly overnight. All of the victims had something very alarming in common, and it should serve as a sobering warning to those lobbying for gun control in the wake of the massacre in Las Vegas just two weeks ago.
Eight individuals were killed and 11 wounded during weekend violence in gun-controlled Chicago. The shootings began at approximately 3:30 pm on Friday, and within just two-and-a-half hours, seven people were shot, including 64-year-old math teacher Cynthia Trevillion, according to Chicago Tribune. The violence persisted on Saturday, and continued on Sunday, as well.
The rest of the weekend was full of more typical Chicago gun violence and gun deaths. The killing of an unidentified, 22-year-old man on Sunday at 11:10 a.m. is a case in point. “He was walking on the sidewalk in the 6700 block of South Jeffery when two males exited a Ford car nearby and opened fire. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, arm and back of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene less than 30 minutes later.” The gunmen were described as “two black males in gray clothing.” [Source: Breitbart]
Chicago has been a violent place for years; the streets are overrun with gangs to such a degree that it is unwise for parents to even allow their children to ride their bikes down the street in certain neighborhoods, where drive-by shootings unfold on a weekly basis. This is admittedly nothing new. However, it is particularly important that we look to Barack Obama’s hometown as an example of the consequences that strict gun control measures present at this time.
In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, the left has used the tragedy to call for further gun control. It is understandable that they would want to do something to help prevent the same thing from unfolding in the future. However, we shouldn’t do something that will inevitably make gun violence worse.
Chicago, despite having the some of the tightest gun control laws in the country, also has some of the worst rates of violent crime. Indeed, it’s difficult to think of another city where nearly two dozen citizens are shot in the timespan of just one weekend. We know conclusively that gun control does not work.
Leftist politicians should refrain from making emotionally-charged and politically expedient decisions when it comes to our inalienable Second Amendment rights. We should not make the same mistake in other cities across the country that Chicago has made, for citizens will pay in their own blood, just as they do every day in Chicago.
